About the "Ballies"
We have come a long way from those early days of touch Rugby on the beaches of Durban. Way back in 2001 a couple of the 'elderly types' entered an invitational side in the 'Vodacom beach Challenge' and whilst sitting around on the golden sand with an 'anber nectar' in the hand the lads were asked "what are you guys called?". The beer at the time was in a Green Bottle and the fellows decided that the 'Green Bottle Ballies' would be splendid name.
The term 'Ballie' is an Afrikaans word for older person and is used by the younger generation to describe thier parents or older people in general.
In 2006 a more organised and regimented club was realised with our entry into the Legends Durban Tournament. There was a need for the club to 'Tidy up', a constitution was drawn up and a small committee put together, the rest - as they say - is history.
We are an over 35's club and play out of the Shongweni Club Pub as is the tradition of any 'Barbarians' orientated club.
We play Golden Oldies, Veterans or Vintage rugger and host a number of touring teams who visit Kwa-zulu Natal in the Republic of South Africa. We enter a touring team that participates in the annual Eshowe 'Bosas' Cup and it is safe to say that Eshowe taked months to recover after the Ballies have spent the weekend.
We subscribe to the International ethos of Oldies rugger and live by the clubs motto of 'Fun, Friendship and Laughter'.
